News : Trading Up (18/12/2004)

Work-based training took a stride into the 21st century with the official opening of ETEC (Sunderland) Limited's new purpose-built premises.

John Hedger, chairman of the Lifelong Learning Sector Skills Council, opened the new £600,000 facility, in Coronation Street, Hendon.

Mr Hedger also presented learner Chris Stothard with £100 worth vouchers as the winning contestant in a competition to name the new building. The building, now named ETEC House, contains the trade centre, named after Company Secretary Walter Yardley.

Mr Hedger said: "This building, in its way, is as exciting as the Baltic Arts Centre, in Gateshead, and the new Tyne Bridge.

"The idea of creating a centre of excellence for construction training, which will support and complement the modernization of the city has been tried and tested elsewhere.

"With the support and enthusiasm of the people here I am sure you will make it a great success."
