Etecs Wall

Wall a Way to Go!

AN ARTS project involving residents and community groups from the Hendon and East End area, of Sunderland, will be unveiled on Wednesday 16 July 2008.

The people’s Wall, funded by regeneration programme Back on the Map, ETEC and the National Lottery’s Awards for All, depicts residents’ visions for the future of Hendon and the East End.

Residents and community groups designed the panels and carved the individual bricks that make up the wall, which has been built at ETEC House, in Coronation Street, Sunderland.

Groups worked with artists Josie Taggart and Alyson Stoker to realise the vision, which includes wildlife centres, dinosaur parks, castles and improved transport links.

The People’s Wall was officially launched by Jules Preston MBE, Chairman of Back on the Map, at ETEC House on 16 July 2008.

Representatives of community organisations involved in the design work will be attending the event.

Members of the public are invited to come and see the wall and find out how it was carved from 12.30pm.

Artist Josie Taggart said: “The People’s Wall is a prime example of how art can be utilised as a tool to unlock the creative potential of communities that are undergoing transformation through regeneration.”

Julie Dyos, ETEC’ s Operations Director, said: “ETEC is extremely pleased to have been able to work closely with local people and community projects on the People’s Wall project.

“This is a unique structure, which aims to have a lasting impact on the area. I would like to express my particular thanks to the artists Josie and Alyson whose hard work and enthusiasm has exceeded all expectations.”

Jules Preston, Chairman of Back on the Map, said: “It is fantastic to be able to launch the People’s Wall, an arts project that will stay as a permanent record of the communities in Hendon and the East End.

“The People’s Wall epitomises what Back on the Map is aiming to achieve in terms of community involvement in the regeneration of the area.”

Among the community groups, who participated in the project, were North East Refugee Services, East Community Association, Hendon Young People’s Project, Hudson Road School, Hendon Valley Road School, the Bangladeshi Centre, Hope Church and Sans Street Youth and Community Centre.

Notes to Editors…Camera crews and reporters are welcome to attend from 11am on Wednesday 16 July 2008.
